When autologous marrow cell transfusions are given to animals receiving from 800 to 1050 R of whole-body irradiation, approximately 50 % of the animals survive beyond the first 30 days postirradiation, and regeneration of the marrow occurs at an earlier time (5, 7-9). Many of these animals, however, die during the first 30 days of the acute irradiation syndrome, despite the cell transfusions. When homologous marrow cell transfusions are employed with similar doses of whole-body irradiation, early regeneration of the marrow occurs, and proliferation of the donor cells can be demonstrated (5, 7, 8).
