- W2078778828 abstract "Body fat percentage may play an important role in determining bone density in young women, however research on this topic is limited. PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between percent body fat and regional bone density of college age women. METHODS: Fourteen female subjects (Age: 19–28 yrs.; Ht: 162.4 ± 7.3 cm; Wt: 55.8 ± 5.1 kg) with normal menstrual histories provided informed consent before completing medical history and physical activity readiness questionnaires (PAR-Q). Percent body fat, calculated from body density using the Siri equation, was determined through hydrostatic weighing. Bone density of the femoral neck (FN) and L1-L4 lumbar spine (LS) was assessed by dual photon x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA; Hologic QDR-4550). Relationship was assessed using Pearson-product moment correlation coefficients (r). RESULTS: Percent body fat (22.3 ± 4.9%), LS density (1.1 ± .01 gm/cm2), and FN density (1.0 ± .01 gm/cm2) values were typical for this age group. Moderate negative correlations existed between FN (r = −.473, p = .101) and LS (r = −.509, p = .068) bone densities and percent fat, but neither was significant. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that percent body fat has a moderate negative correlation with lumbar spine and femoral neck bone density." @default.
