- W2078805364 abstract "The sacro-iliac joint is now generally regarded as a diarthrosis. The articular surfaces of the sacrum and ilium are covered with thin layers of cartilage, separated by a joint cavity, a narrow cleft, and held together by ligaments collectively forming a capsule very thick posteriorly. Only slight gliding movements are permitted. According to the common teaching, the weight of the trunk, transmitted in large part to the base of the sacrum, causes the latter to tend to rotate on a transverse axis, and because of the oblique position of the sacrum the promontory would tend to move downward and forward and the inferior part of the sacrum to move upward and backward. The sacrotuberous, sacrospinous and posterior sacro-iliac ligaments function in limiting this rotary movement of the sacrum on the iliac bones. This is the picture of the sacro-iliac articulation given in the textbooks of Quain, von Bardeleben, Poirer and" @default.
