- W2078929835 abstract "The crustal deformation which has been occurring in Finland since the last ice age is principally caused by glacio-isostatic uplift, as a result of which the highest postglacial shorelines in the country are located over 200 m above the present sea level. The uplift rate was well over ten times higher during and immediately after deglaciation in each region than it is today, so that numerous vertical faults were created in the northern part of Fennoscandia in the period 9000-8500 BP. In addition to this isostatic land uplift, the fluctuations in water level immediately after deglaciation were also affected by elastic rebound, geoid deformation and fluctuations occurring in the Baltic Sea basin independently of those taking place in the oceans in general. There was a marked decrease in the rate of uplift at 8500-8000 BP, and the highest rate recorded currently in Finland is just over 8 mm/year. This figure is estimated to include a 10–20% contribution from a tectonic component arising from the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Uplift has moved the shoreline outwards towards the sea, particularly on the flat west coast of Finland, which has a high rate of uplift. A large number of raised shorelines lie at different levels above sea level, and the effect of wave action is particularly evident in the glaciofluvial sand and gravel of eskers." @default.
