- W2078930185 abstract "I agree wholeheartedly that we need to be more polite in using our language as professionals. It is amazing how unaware the operating theatre staff can be of the impact of using inappropriate language at a time when the patient is just waking from a general anaesthetic. I have come across such a situation several times during the last four years of anaesthetic training in four different hospitals. On one occasion, a member of the operating theatre staff kept saying ‘shut up’ to the alarming ventilator that could not achieve the set lower limit of minute volume while the patient was waking from the anaesthetic. Later, during my postoperative visit, the patient remembered someone saying ‘shut up’ to him during the operation. I apologised and gave him an explanation. On another occasion, I was assessing the adequacy of the patient's breathing before extubation in the operating theatre and commented that she was not breathing adequately. At which one of the operating theatre nurses joked (probably in good humour), ‘Is that a problem doctor?’ and laughed. At that point I put the patient back to sleep. Except for the anaesthetic team, most other members of the operating theatre team seem to be unaware of the importance of the stage of emergence from anaesthesia. Although good humour and such conversations, which may be completely out of context to the patient care, help us in reducing the level of stress at work, in my opinion, we should be careful about this and show more consideration to the patient who is just waking from an anaesthetic." @default.
