- W2078942646 abstract "A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the effects of salinity, aeration, and pH on the growth of Spartina alterniflora Loisel. grown in sand-nutrient culture. Aeration had no effect on growth. This result was attributed to high redox potentials in non-aerated sand-nutrient cultures and aeration did little to raise redox potentials further. Significant interactions between pH and salinity were observed. At pH 4 and 8, plant growth was significantly lower than at pH 6. Maximum growth was observed at pH 6 and 15‰ salinity. Of the four salinity levels used (15, 25, 35, and 45‰ with pH 6, the 45‰ level minimized biomass production. At pH 4, plant performance was modified little by salinity when compared to the pH 6 treatments. At pH 8, maximum plant growth performance occurred at 35‰ salinity, but performance differences were small when compared to those at pH 6. Salinity influenced tissue nutrient concentrations. As salinity increased, K, Ca, Mg, Na, and Cl tissue concentrations increased while P concentrations decreased. However, the nature of the response of tissue nutrient concentrations to salinity was strongly dependent on pH. Copper, Zn, Fe, and N tissue concentrations were not significantly different between treatments. Manganese and S levels were significantly different only between pH treatments and no response to salinity was observed. The interactions between pH and salinity observed in this experiment are important in evaluating S. alterniflora response in nutrient culture experiments and salt marsh experiments established in catclay substrata which do not remain saturated throughout the growing season." @default.
