- W207895306 abstract "ABSTRACT For the poor and developing nations, technologies like energy from space through satellites are a far cry from the present reality. The immediate priorities in the total energy planning seem to be: (a) Effective and frugal tapping of all the available conventional energy sources, especially vast untapped and renewable hydro power. Through proper engineering even small streams can be made to yield a reasonable amount of electric power, especially with pumped storage facility; pumped storage systems are ideally suited for bulk storage of solar energy. (b) Conservation of energy by planning its efficient utilization and reprocessing the waste energy. (c) Simple and low cost methodologies for harnessing renewable alternate energy sources in the form of direct solar energy, wind power, and biomass energy. For solar power generation of any appreciable quantity, whether it is through solar-thermal or photovoltaic converters, the use of large areas poses a serious problem for land use. The hydro-reservoirs fed by seasonal flows of Indian rivers face the problem of large evaporation losses. The concept of a reservoir based solar power station offers twin benefits of countering this malaise. The floating arrays of solar collectors screen the water surface from the sun and collect the solar energy for power generation. The cool water below the solar collectors is an additional plus; it facilitates cooling for solar cells or provides, in conjunction with solar concentrators, a large temperature difference for thermoelectric conversion. Medium sized village irrigation tanks would be well suited for floating solar power generators and in combination with other renewable energy sources like biomass could meet the basic energy requirements of small rural communities. A valley of the appropriate configuration (parabolic in cross-section and aligned north-south) may be effectively utilized for ‘tower top solar generation’, using fixed reflectors. Elimination of the control gear for the collectors offers enormous savings in the cost and complexity of the system. This paper illustrates the concept of an integrated stream-hydro and reservoir valley-based solar energy system. An overview of the appropriate technologies that may be adopted is presented, including ‘solar-thermal photovoltaic’ converters of improved efficiency and ‘solar thermoelectric’ cells that make use of high temperature absorbers and low temperature water surface for conversion." @default.
