- W2079058298 abstract "Differential sensitivities of cells in various stages of division to irradiations were among the first observations of biological effects of radiations (1). This phenomenon seems to be a common finding regardless of age or organism-plant (2) or animal (3). Gametic cells in various maturation stages illustrate differential radiation sensitivities which are subject to alterations due to environmental conditions especially in poikilothermic and stenothermic organisms. Criteria used for estimating radiation-induced chromosomal damage in gametes have included: dominant lethals for Drosophila (4), for Habrobracon (5), and for mice (6, 7); recessive lethals and chromosome aberrations for Drosophila (8-10); and chromosome aberrations for plants (11), Habrobracon (12, 13), and Sciara (14). In this paper dominant lethals and chromosome aberrations were used to explain the altered productivities of day-old X-irradiated flour beetles. The extent of the modifications of productivities was dependent on temperature and on the sex irradiated, which is probably due to the numbers and degree of maturation of gametes at the time of X-irradiation. Parameters of productivity investigated were (1) day of reproductive onset, (2) numbers of fertile pairs, and (3) progeny survival to adulthood." @default.
