- W2079088075 abstract "It has been nearly four decades since Jones and Smith (1973) and Jones et al. (1973, 1974) published their landmark articles reporting their observation of a constellation of identifiable birth defects in infants of women who drank alcohol heavily during pregnancy. They found that the combined presence of preand postnatal growth deficits, microcephaly (a proxy measure of central nervous system defects), and a pattern of subtle abnormalities in facial features were associated with heavy maternal alcohol use and was termed fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Although similar observations were published in French by Lemoine et al. (1968), the publications by Jones and Smith (1973) and Jones et al. (1973, 1974) were central to bringing scientific and social attention to the potentially harmful effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Reports following the initial studies confirmed evidence of FAS in other populations, but substantial debate ensued about the overall prevalence and risk (e.g., Armstrong and Abel, 2000) and even whether alcohol was the causal agent (rather than poor nutrition, other risk factors, or poor prenatal health in alcohol-dependent women). A large amount of scientific research related to FAS has been generated since 1973, including many studies using in vivo animal models (e.g., mouse, rat, guinea pig, sheep, pig, primate, and zebrafish) and in vitro models (e.g., embryo, tissue, and cell culture systems) of prenatal alcohol exposure. The animal research has been crucial for advancing the understanding of alcohol-induced developmental disorders, including establishing with certainty that alcohol exposure of the developing conceptus can cause the diagnostic phenotypes of FAS and assessing the impact of major risk factors (Abel and Hannigan, 1995; Goodlett and Johnson, 1999; Maier and West, 2001). The amount of research addressing FAS over the last four decades has been remarkable. For example, a PubMed search" @default.
