- W2079112862 abstract "High-yielding rice production is dependent upon a sufficient and uniform plant density. Rice producers often encounter circumstances that result in plant densities that are below the recommended critical level of approximately 160 plants/m2. When this occurs, management decisions must be made expeditiously to minimize economic losses associated with sub-optimal plant densities. Research was conducted in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri during 2005 and 2006 to evaluate early-season applications of N fertilizer (zero N or 22 kg of N per ha as ammonium sulfate) to the cultivars ‘Cheniere’ and ‘Wells’ planted at four seeding rates (81, 161, 323, and 645 seeds/m2) on two soil textures. On silt loam and clay soils, grain yields reached a plateau at seeding rates of 161 and 323 seeds/m2, respectively. On clay soils, regardless of seeding rate, grain yields were increased by approximately 200 kg/ha when 22 kg of N per ha was applied to two-leaf stage rice compared with no starter N. Starter N did not increase rice grain yields on silt loam soils; however, the data suggested that a potential production savings can be realized by reducing the seeding rate on silt loam soils to 161 seeds/m2, as long as an environment void of undue plant stress can be provided. Furthermore, if the decision is made to manage a field with areas where a critically low plant stand exists (less than 168 plants/m2 on clay and less than 83 plants/m2 on silt loam) a yield loss of approximately 10 to 15% can be realized in those affected areas." @default.
