- W2079130286 abstract "The link between the upper and lower airways in allergic disease has been demonstrated through associations found in epidemiology, pathophysiology and response to therapy. The upper and lower airways are closely linked in function and disease and are increasingly considered as one continuous pathway. More than half of the population with allergic rhinitis also has asthma. It has long been observed that patients with allergic rhinitis but no diagnosis of asthma have increased airway responsiveness compared to patients without rhinitis. When patients undergo nasal allergen challenge, lower airway hyperresponsiveness has been shown to increase. Factors that may influence bronchial hyperresponsiveness in patients with allergic rhinitis include postnasal drainage into the bronchi, the presence of a nasobronchial reflex, nasal obstruction leading to inhaling dry air and systemic absorption of inflammatory mediators released in the nose. There is also a link between rhinitis and sinusitis. Over 31 million Americans develop sinusitis each year. Treatment of the upper airways has been shown to improve lower airway symptoms. This had been shown for nasal corticosteroids and antihistamines. The mechanism for the improvement is not clear." @default.
