- W2079135921 abstract "The following ethnographically based analysis utilizes the events of the 1987 and 1989 stock market crashes to trace a migrating ideology about the stock market in relationship- to the economic health and power of the nation, from its centrality as the penultimate engine driving growth and prosperity to a sideshow of secondary significance in the realm of high finance and big business.Throughout this transference of signification the relations of power highlighted in the events of the two crashes remain extraordinarily similar insofar as national and international forces are mobilized to shore up the financial markets. This change of ideology and maintenance of power relations appears as a contradiction, and it is the path of this contradiction which is traced out here.A focus on the ideology of the market in relationship to the forces of power surrounding it is finally turned on the business school community. Market enrapture engulfs academe: business schools have become finance departments and accounting research has its “Financial Revolution≓. The market colonization of accounting research is evident from its CRISP tapes, event studies, semi-strong efficiency, residuals, betas and so on. But as the market nearly died in October 1987, and stumbled badly again in 1989, the market's emphemeral and capricious nature was laid bare, putting at risk the requirements of social consent and control inherent to the reproduction of the system of which it is presumed integral. The rupture of market performance and ideology hence requires legitimating explanation, but how can you do so without undermining the process of the construction of consent itself a basis of legitimation? The cognitive turmoil reasonably expected has yet to be fully felt in accounting thought. Yet the nascent social contradictions and conflicts concerning the stock market portended by and channelled through the market crashes are likely sufficient to signal dramatic upheavals for accounting research." @default.
