- W2079149265 abstract "Arthritis Mutilans, or opera glass hands, is not a common condition, but its appearance is so striking that it is unmistakable. It was described by Borge, Neilson, and Engill (1946), and they quoted four cases. It appears to affect women exclusively, and all cases give a history of some form of polyarthritis in early adult life, with eventual loosening of the joints and shortening of the long bones. It is believed typical of these cases that, whilst the terminal interphalangeal joints are almost normal, the majority of the other bones of the extremities are extensively destroyed. The affected joints show much increased mobility and the sensation of handling them is similar to that of holding a badly stuffed doll: the adjacent bones can be telescoped into one another to an extent of 2 or 3 in., without causing pain to the patient." @default.
