- W2079188212 abstract "Experimental modification of the hydromineral equilibrium elicits branchial and renal regulatory responses in Carassius auratus. 1.1. The intraperitoneal injection of a 30 mM sodium chloride solution or of a 4% mannitol solution, both causing a dilution of plasma electrolytes, results in an increased rate of absorption of sodium and chloride by the gills. A 700 mM sodium chloride solution, on the other hand, causes the organism to lose sodium by inhibiting the influx and increasing the outflux across the gills. The experiments were designed to make it possible to study independently three possible factors evoking the branchial responses. The results clearly indicate that it is neither increase of extracellular space nor change of plasma osmotic pressure, but variation in the plasma electrolyte concentration, which is the factor determining the observed reactions.2.2. As regards renal excretion, injection of a 30 mM sodium chloride solution evokes a diuretic response and that of a 700 mM solution, an antidiuretic response. In both cases the glomerular, free water and inulin clearances are affected in a similar manner. The injection of dilute solutions has no effect on sodium excretion. The injection of a 700 mM solution causes paradoxically, an increased tubular reabsorption of this ion, the ratio CNa:CIn diminishing significantly. It has not been possible to clarify the nature of the stimulus causing these reactions, for injections of aqueous solutions of mannitol independently produce an osmotic diuresis. The relative importance of the two effector organs in osmoregulation and the possible endocrine control of the observed responses are discussed." @default.
