- W2079238022 abstract "Abstract A previously uncultivated, genin-containing Dioscorea was planted on recent, low-bulk-density volcanic ash soil in Central America to reduce costs of harvesting the deep-growing (one meter) tubers. Yields were 30 to 50% of the expected. In greenhouse microplot experiments reported earlier, seedling tubers grew proportionally to steady state soil water content both below and above field capacity range. It was concluded that the species requires readily available (low-tension) water in quantity for rapid growth. To verify this unusual finding and to establish suitable criteria for site selection, the soil water content under a field planting was measured weekly over a 3-year crop cycle. Failure of the crop to lower soil water content substantially below field capacity in wet and dry seasons (the latter with overhead irrigation) is interpreted as verification of a low-tension water requirement. Tuber growth occurred only during two consecutive six-month-long wet seasons (mean rainfall 3.5 m) when water content of some portion of the soil profile remained at or above the lower limit of field capacity, 43%. During crop development, soil water content declined steadily from a maximum of 50–60% to slightly below 43% in all parts of the profile by about crop month 34. No further yield increment occurred up to 51 months following planting, and this sequence was repeated in successive plantings on the same site. Thus, the principal limitation to growth was both dry season interruption and progressive depletion by crop consumption of readily available water supply. Dependence of root viability upon soil water content suggests that the roots were the principal point of impact of soil water limitations upon tuber growth. Consequently, the site of choice would possess a porous, low-bulk-density soil subtended by a shallow, permanent water-table." @default.
