- W2079300651 abstract "Intravenously administered glutamate caused a transient arrest of the electrogram of the corpus striatum in chickens from 16 days of incubation to the time of hatching. In animals examined 5 days after hatching glutamate injection had no noticeable effect on the EEG. The glutamate administration also caused in chickens up to the time of hatching a drop in the tissue conductivity of the corpus striatum. This either developed rather rapidly and was then often accompanied by a slow potential change resembling the potential change accompanying spreading depression, or the impedance drop developed more slowly and was then usually accompanied by uncharacteristic and very slow changes in potential. These phenomena were absent in 5-day-old chickens. Spreading depression was elicited by local application of 25% KCl solution in chickens incubated for 18 days or longer. The effects of intravenous glutamate administration resemble some of the concomitants of spreading depression and asphyxiation, supporting the postulate that the latter are caused by a glutamate release from the intracellular compartment of the brain. It also suggests that the blood-brain barrier is quite permeable for glutamate before the time of hatching." @default.
