- W207935050 abstract "AbstractTumor metastasis is considered a late stage of cancer progression and has traditionally been associated with a poor overall prognosis. The liver is one of the most common sites for the development of distant metastases from many different solid malignancies. The management of liver metastases has evolved significantly over the last several decades. Early experience with aggressive resection of hepatic metastases was associated with high morbidity and poor overall survival. These initial, poor outcomes with aggressive therapy led to some resistance in many centers to consider a surgical approach to hepatic metastases of non-gastrointestinal (non-GI) origin, and as a result treatment strategies tended to focus on palliative chemotherapy to slow disease progression and improve overall survival. However, recent advances in the field of hepatobiliary surgery have led to a renewed, albeit cautious, interest in the use of surgical resection for hepatic metastases of non-gastrointestinal malignancies. This chapter will review the available literature for each of several malignancies in the hope of providing guidance for clinical decision-making and will also highlight some of the areas in which data is clearly lacking.KeywordsLiver metastasesLiver resectionNon-gastrointestinal tumorsSelection criteria" @default.
