- W2079353105 abstract "The effect of temperature change on the elastic force exerted by a stretched, unstimulated muscle at constant length has been investigated. At small and large elongations, the temperature coefficient is negative: the muscle behaves like a normal solid. At intermediate elongations the coefficient is positive and the elastic force increases more rapidly than the absolute temperature. From this behaviour the following conclusions about the structure of muscle and the origin of the elastic force may be drawn: ( a ) The elastic system of muscle (and in particular that of the fibrils) consists of flexible, primary-valence chain molecules, the arrangement of which in the resting muscle is random and highly probable, but becomes ordered and less probable in the stretched muscle. Thermal agitation tends to provoke a return to the original, unordered condition." @default.
