- W2079370301 abstract "Based on the hypothesis that the solid portion of the earth, as a rotating body, conserves angular momentum, the variations hi the length of the day imply changes in the polar moment of inertia of the solid earth and probably of the earth as a whole. These in turn imply changes in the second zonal harmonic J2 and, consequently, changes in the orbital motion of near-earth satellites. A detailed investigation of the observed value of the right ascension of the ascending node of 1960 Iota-2, the carrier rocket for Echo 1, was conducted for 5 years of orbital data. It appears that the changes of angular velocity in the solid crust are probably not explained by changes of the moment of inertia; i.e., the angular momentum of solid earth is not constant. Presumably there is an exchange of angular momentum with the fluids of the earth in the core, hydrosphere, or atmosphere." @default.
