- W2079384251 abstract "Several experimental investigations have already been performed into the brightnessvoltage relationship in electroluminescent (EL) ZnS(Cu) excited with an oscillating potential (1). These measurements, however, concern excitation at frequencies starting from some ten Hz and rising up to 106 Hz. As far as we know, results on the form of the brightness-voltage law obtained with excitation at very low frequencies have never been published. In contrast, however, some deal of work has been done by Soviet authors on the brightness-frequency relationship, beginning from 0.01 Hz (2). Even if the applied voltages were different in the various experiments, the reported data are by no means sufficient for the deduction of the brightness-voltage law. This is an unfortunate circumstance because the voltage dependence of the EL emission at low frequency allows one to obtain important information about the mechanism of the process. We must keep in mind, in fact, that the emission takes place through two essential steps, that is the production of the electron-hole pairs and their recombination through the Cu act ivator levels. The second step, clearly, is the same as in all the ZnS luminescent phenomena and, therefore, it is of little importance as far as we are concerned. with the explanation of EL. We must take into account, in this connection, that the recombination occurs through a t ime interval which is related to the kind of luminescent centre involved. Therefore, by changing the exciting frequency and consequently the t ime allowed for the recombination, an effect ensues which depends on the recombination kinetics. In this way, we can explain how, by increasing the frequency, the maximum emission is shifted from the green to the blue band. If, on the contrary, a very small frequency is chosen (so that the recombination process can run up to the thermal equilibrium) and the voltage is varied, an effect is expected which depends on the electron excitation mechanism, that is to say on the first step of the EL process. Roughly speaking, at low frequencies, the brightness behaviour against the frequency gives, essentially, information about the recombination, while that against the voltage allows the study" @default.
