- W2079403881 abstract "Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, with about 500 000 new cases each year. Mortality is higher in developing countries than in developed countries, with around 200 000 deaths reported a year compared with 70 000 in developed countries. Half of the cases of cervical cancer that are identified every year occur in women who have not been properly screened either because of low coverage of Papanicolaou testing, the limitations of such testing (including insufficient quality control of the procedure), or limited access to health facilities for screening and treatment. Therefore, to search for alternative technologies to screen for cervical cancer is essential. Establishment of the causal link between high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) and cervical cancer 1 Bosch FX de Sanjosé S Chapter 1: human papillomavirus and cervical cancer—burden and assessment of causality. J Natl Cancer Inst Monogr. 2003; 31: 3-13 Crossref PubMed Scopus (723) Google Scholar sets the basis for new areas of research that include the application of HPV testing and biomarkers to identify women at high risk of progression to cervical cancer and its precursors. Testing for high-risk HPV is more sensitive and has a higher negative predictive value to detect the immediate precursors of cervical cancer (high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia; CIN2/3) than cervical cytology, at the cost of a small decrease in specificity and positive predictive value. 2 Cuzick J Mayrand MH Ronco G Snijders P Wardle J Chapter 10: New dimensions in cervical cancer screening. Vaccine. 2006; 24: 90-97 Crossref PubMed Scopus (120) Google Scholar Several studies have shown that HPV testing is more efficient than repeated cytology in the triage of ambiguous cytological lesions, is at least as efficient as cytology when used a primary screening test, and is more efficient than cytology as a test of follow-up for recurrence after treatment for pre-invasive lesions of the cervix. 3 Cuzick J Clavel C Petry KU et al.
