- W2079403921 abstract "Since the introduction of current safe sleeping guidance by the Department of Health (1991), sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) rates in the UK have fallen dramatically. However, statistics suggest that the incidence of SIDS over the past 5 years has seen little change (Office for National Statistics (ONS), 2011). SIDS is the most common cause of post-neonatal mortality in the first year of life (Côté, 2010). In comparison to some developed countries, the UK has a high SIDS and infant mortality rate (ONS, 2011). A growing body of evidence suggests that the use of dummies may be associated with a reduction in SIDS (Hauck et al, 2005). However, dummy use is not currently recommended in the UK due to the suggested negative impact that dummies may have on breastfeeding, otitis media (middle ear infection) and dental malocclusion. This paper details a literature search that was undertaken in relation to SIDS and dummy use in order to understand whether there is an association between dummy use and a reduction in SIDS rates, and whether dummy use has a negative impact on breastfeeding and infant health and wellbeing." @default.
