Although there are a growing number of studies on aging couples, the literature review provides little information on the marital and sexual functioning of elderly couples living at home. The purpose of this second article is to present the results of the survey on the sexual aspects using a more global survey on marital, sexual and psychological function of older couples. Differences in sex and age are also discussed. Data were collected from 508 elderly couples living at home, representative of the French population in Quebec. However, 394 couples took part in two meetings over a period of 18 months. The results show that sexual functioning of older couples tends to diminish with age during a period of 18 months in men. However, in women, sexual functioning remains relatively stable for both age levels and for the 18-month period of the study in women. Sexual desire continues, but with aspects that characterize that age. In general, even with a drop in sexual functioning, especially in terms of certain genital activities, elderly couples are satisfied with their sexual functioning. This study suggests that we should establish statistical standards to determine what is “normal” sexual functioning in seniors instead of comparing their sexual functioning to that of younger people. As well, the concept of sexual dysfunction needs to be redefined in older people, and the importance of developing the appropriate tools for assessing sexuality in older people. Recommendations were also made on the importance of marital and sexual intervention in older couples for preventive and therapeutic reasons.
