- W2079460647 abstract "Phase diagrams have been obtained and a calorimetric investigation has been made of solutions of four glassy polymers that have an upper critical mixing temperature, namely, poly-1-vinylpyrazole-toluene, PS-cyclohexane, PS-decalin and PVA-tetrachloromethane. Dissolution is accompanied in all these cases by the evolution of heat but the sign of the curvature of the concentrationdependence of the enthalpy of mixing changes with composition. In the concentration region corresponding to the occurrence of an upper critical temperature, the second derivative of the enthalpy of mixing with respect to composition is negative, that is, the thermodynamic criterion for an upper critical temperature is observed. A method of calculating the enthalpy of mixing of glassy polymers with a solvent is proposed; this is based on the UNIQUAC statistical model which enables one to separate the contribution caused by interaction between the polymer and the solvent from the contribution arising from the original open structure of the glassy polymer. The “structural” contribution is shown to be negative and the contribution from interaction is positive and it is precisely this which determines the existence of an upper critical temperature in the systems investigated." @default.
