- W2079461623 abstract "This chapter reviews the early era of aerobic metabolism study, from the 1780s to the 1960s, and provides with a historical perspective derived from the 1911 review of Nathan Zuntz and the 1950 review of Alexander von Muralt. The early era starts with the discovery that the animals consume oxygen. By the latter part of the nineteenth century, methods had been developed to measure oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production accurately. Nathan Zuntz (1847-1920) utilized this methodology to determine the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) of humans at rest and during exercise. The modern eras of exercise biochemistry and exercise metabolism began in the middle 1960s primarily as a result of activities attributed to several individuals in the United States and within Scandinavia. The American scientists Philip D. Gollnick (1935-1991) conducted research and initiated a graduate program in exercise biochemistry, Charles M. Tipton (1927) established a research and graduate program with an emphasis in exercise physiology and biochemistry, and John O. Holloszy (1933) conducted biochemical research, established a biochemistry laboratory, and initiated a postdoctoral training program for individuals interested in exercise biochemistry and metabolism." @default.
