- W2079464176 abstract "Commentators have often focused on the influence of Torbern Bergman's chemical treatise, De attractionibus electivas (1775) in evaluating the relationships in novel, Die Wahlverwandtschaften (Adler, Goethe's use... 263-79 and Eine fast... esp. 32-83; Steer 37-49; Milfull 83-94; Yee 58-70). own scientific texts, however, including his works on botany, comparative anatomy, and optics, provide a compelling criticism of the chemical theory as it is interpreted by the characters in the novel. Where the characters often focus, in theory as well as in practice, on destructive, narcissistic unions (Miller 185-94; Stopp 65ff; Wietholter 8-21), scientific texts point to the possibility of fruitful polar unions. The emphasis on polar productivity in his scientific works thus provides a new perspective with which to evaluate the characters' respective views on marriage, family, and productivity generally. Therefore, while commentators have focused on the dichotomy of duty and passion in interpreting the family relationships in the novel (see Bell 298-99 and Constantine 390-92 for a review of this reception), Goethe' s scientific texts point to another important dichotomy in the novel — that between productive and destructive polar desire. This article, however, does not suggest that Goethe was either a proponent of the nuclear family or that the novel advocates any one particular family structure (cf. Barnes 14; Reiss 207; Steer 247-48; Miller 177; Gilli 560). Indeed, one would have a difficult time finding support for such arguments within the framework of the novel. The staunchest advocate of monogamous marriage, Mittler, is a bachelor; the appearance of a baby presents a good argument for divorce; and Ottilie, the woman whom the narrator portrays as a sort of ideal mother, carries a baby in her arm while simultaneously reading and walking, and she ultimately drowns the child while attempting to steer a rowboat. Instead, this article contends that Goethe was critical of any family configuration or reconfiguration — traditional or Romantic — to the extent that it impedes individual growth and/or creativity. An examination of polarities within scientific works shows that he" @default.
