- W2079488257 abstract "The ergodic and mixing questions are studied for the dynamical systems obtained by truncation of the Fourier-transformed two-dimensional Euler equations with periodic boundary conditions. Such statistical properties are important because they bear a close relationship to the existence of coherent structures in turbulent flow fields. These theoretical relationships are derived in particular for the case of macroscopic vortex structures. The main emphasis is on the numerical analysis of these statistical properties. Several different systems with various a priori statistical properties (ergodic, nonergodic, unknown) have been computed; in this manner, comparison standards are established for systems with unknown statistical properties. A careful error analysis is presented for the results; in particular, it is found that final integration times for the modal truncations must be kept small (relative to a relaxation time) in order to insure numerical accuracy. The consequences of this fact are important for the numerical study of the ergodic/mixing question." @default.
