- W2079532178 abstract "Using electrophysiological recordings, methylene blue stains, and histological cross-sections, a pair of mechanoreceptor organs (ventral phasic receptors, or VPRs) have been found in abdominal segments 2 to 7 in Blaberus craniifer. Each receptor has four to seven encapsulated receptor cells and a single large fibrous attachment to the cuticle near the ventral midline. It lacks a second attachment to the cuticle, but fine strands projecting into the surrounding soft tissues from the cell body region may provide a functional second attachment. The VPRs respond in a highly phasic manner to a variety of mechanical stimuli, including tapping the recording table, probing the ventral muscles, high intensity sounds, movements produced during ventilation and by contraction of the inner sternal muscles, and vertical movements of the whole abdomen. The VPRs probably act as ventilation receptors in intact animals, but other functions are also likely." @default.
