- W2079558306 abstract "Using a two-stage survey, we attempted to estimate the prevalence of illnesses causing pre-senile dementia in Ibaraki prefecture (pop. 3 million) located in central Japan. For this study, the definition of pre-senile dementia was operationalized as individuals with dementia whose age at onset is less than 65 yrs. Postal questionnaires were sent to 2475 institutions medical and welfare institutions in the prefecture handling dementia patients. The first survey asked how many under-65 pre-senile dementia individuals were in their care. In a second questionnaire sent to institutions dealing with one or more cases, we requested data concerning demographics, coexisting illnesses, duration and type of dementia, severity of dementia, and functional status. The response rate was88.3% for the first stage and84.2% for the second. In total, information from 603 patients was collected from 285 institutions. Since 35 patients were receiving care from two or more institutions simultaneously, the final sample population identified 540 patients (57.4% male). We estimated the prevalence rate of pre-senile dementia in Ibaraki prefecture to be 24.2 per 100.000 persons. Of the types of illnesses identified in the 540-patient sample, vascular dementia (VaD) was the most frequent (46.7%), followed by Alzheimer's disease (AD) (29.3%), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)/ Parkinson disease with dementia (PDD)(6.5%), Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) (3.0%), and others (14.6%). The mean age at onset of all the patients was 54.3 years (range 25–64 years, standard deviation 6.5), and no significant differences for the age at onset were observed for each of the illnesses. To our knowledge, this is the first study from an Asian country estimating the prevalence of pre-senile dementia in a large community sample, and the results appear similar with those from western countries. Regarding illnesses causing dementia, our results are different from previous reports from memory clinics in Japan, especially in the higher frequency of VaD and lower frequency of AD." @default.
