- W2079632885 abstract "A hydrothermal treatment has been applied in this study to control the crystallinity and morphology of nanometre scale carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite (C-HA) crystallites. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the morphology of C-HA was changed from acicular to rod-like by the treatment, while, selected area diffraction patterns changed from the ringed pattern of an amorphous material to the spotted pattern of a polycrystalline material. The increase in the crystallinity of C-HA was also confirmed by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Biocompatibility testing showed that there was some evidence of LDH release from primary human monocytes/macrophages when in contact with high concentrations of C-HA crystallites, but there was no significant release of inflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha. Moreover, the nano-sized C-HA crystallites were not cytotoxic to human osteoblast-like MG63 cells and normal actin cytoskeletal organization was observed. These results indicate the biocompatibility of these nano-sized C-HA crystallites, which may offer the potential to formulate composites for biomedical applications." @default.
