- W2079667092 abstract "A conventional light scattering study in the absence of any electric fields on aqueous solutions of hectorite, indicated that the solute particles were characterised by a weight average molecular weight of 1.02 × 108 and a Z average radius of gyration of 1,800 A. The latter corresponded to a rod length of 6,300 A. The appropriateness of a rod-like model was confirmed by subsidiary experiments using an electron microscope. Changes in the intensity of the scattered light result from the application of alternating electric fields. An alternating component, which fluctuates at twice the frequency of the applied field, is introduced. A brief outline of the theory of these effects is given for solutions of rigid polar or electrically anisotropic rod-like molecules. When the hectorite solutions were subjected to fields up to 200 v.cm−1 at frequencies up to 1 keps, the intensity changes indicated that the solution consisted of particles possessing both a permanent dipole moment across and an electrical anisotropy along the equivalent rod. The frequency dependence of both the steady and alternating components of the intensity changes enabled rotary diffusion constants of 165 sec−1 and 170 sec−1 to be associated with the polar and electrically anisotropic particles respectively. It was thus concluded that these electrical properties are associated with one and the same particle and that hectorite consists of one major constituent and not a mixture." @default.
