Energy balance was measured from the 8th to 12th week of age and the validity of this study for humans needs confirmation since observations in animals are only possible indications to what happens in humans. Experiments in animals are indicated whenever the protocol cannot be applied to humans. It would be very difficult to submit humans to diets with a constant formula from weaning to adulthood. Energy cannot be created nor destroyedNutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular DiseasesVol. 16Issue 7PreviewThe paper by Coelho et al. [1] raises more questions than answers. The authors, with a complex and uncontrolled experimental protocol using three sets of rats and energy balance studies at 8 weeks only, conclude that salt restriction between weaning and 12 week of age increases body weight, induces changes in food intake, hormone profile, energy expenditure and tissue angiotensin II content in comparison to high salt and normal salt in rats. The validity of these results and the relevance to humans are questionable.
