- W2079803014 abstract "Recent research on the New Service Class and arguments about Postmodernism have posed new ways of using the countryside, and pointed in the direction of the position of the rural in cultural terms. However, these reduce diversity in both oversimplifying the cultural value on the countryside of the Service Class, and commodification has exploited the Postmodern culture by reducing diversity to marketable units. This paper asserts that what people make of the rural is much more problematic, and that the idea of popular culture is important in understanding the way in which that happens. This paper argues for the recognition of a greater diversity, and this paper explores the concepts and methods of cultural studies. Looking at different ideologies and the events of people's everyday lives, this provides useful insights into the cultural construction of the rural. The paper uses the idiosynchratic example of allotments in contemporary culture to suggest alternative constructions in the way we make sense of the rural. Consequences for the exercise of power, the engagement of policy, and claims on rights to use the rural are considered." @default.
