- W2079885464 abstract "An investigation of the changes in the number of mast cells in the intima and adventitia of 30 human atherosclerotic aortae and coronary arteries was made. The results were compared with the number of mast cells in 10 aortae and coronary arteries, that showed no atherosclerosis on general examination. A periarterial mastocytosis was established in the atherosclerotic vessels. This increased simultaneously with the progress of the atherosclerotic injury to the vessel wall. A statistically significant correlation between most stages of atherosclerosis and the number of mast cells in the corresponding section of the adventitia was also established. The increase in the number of mast cells in males was clearer. A marked decrease in the number of mast cells in the intima of atherosclerotic aortae and coronary arteries was noted when a comparison was made with the number of mast cells in undamaged vessels. The importance of periarterial mastocytosis in the development of atherosclerosis is discussed in connection with the action of the heparin they produce. The decrease in the number of mast cells in the intima of atherosclerotic vessels is jnterpreted as due to disintegration of the cellular and nbrillar structures in the inner arterial coat. It is pointed out that periarterial mastocytosis is most probably due to the role which mast cells play in the formation of connective tissue in atherosclerotic foei. This assumption also explains the irregular aggregation of mast cells in different parts of the arterial wall as a process connected with the stage of development of the atherosclerotic process." @default.
