- W2080149240 abstract "The interference effect or reduction in magnitude of cochlear microphonics (CM) for one tone in the presence of a second tone presented at levels above its own limits of linearity was described by Wever, Bray, and Lawrence [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 12, 268–280 (1940)]. Their findings are confirmed for CM recorded differentially from any cochlear turn if traveling waves for both tones reach the electrodes. During interference, the input-output function is shifted toward fewer microvolts per microbar, harmonic distortion is decreased relatively more, and the limit of linearity is shifted to higher sound pressures. A change in the transfer function for transformation of basilar membrane displacement to CM is inferred. The frequent coexistence of the classical negative summating potential (SP) and interference suggests that SP may be an electrical sign of the mechanical change. However, interference may occur without SP; dc potentials related to asymmetrical transfer functions for electronic gates, for the middle ear, or for CM are often present; and maximum voltages for CM constitute boundary conditions for all input combinations.
