- W2080208197 abstract "Just like clothing, wireless access methods seem to move in and out of fashion. In the mid 1990s, CDMA (code-division multiple access) was the fashionable access method for cellular, fixed wireless and W-LAN solutions. In the early 2000s, OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) seems to have taken on the mantle of the 'up and coming' access solution. Already used in digital sound and TV broadcasting, OFDM is being deployed in W-LANs and fixed wireless systems and is being proposed by many as the likely technology behind 4G. There were good reasons for the popularity of CDMA, but are there good reasons for OFDM, and is CDMA no longer appropriate? In order to answer these questions, a short overview of how OFDM compares to other access technologies is necessary to demonstrate its advantages and disadvantages. The analysis demonstrates that OFDM is appropriate for broadcasting and high-speed W-LANs, may be appropriate for cellular, but is inappropriate for fixed wireless. OFDM clearly has a role in certain situations. However, is far from a universal access solution and its use needs to be determined based on the expected multipath coupled with the trade-offs being made in the system design. OFDM may be trendy, but sometimes the boring old solutions are the best!" @default.
