- W2080342806 abstract "THAT THE CHEMICAL REVOLUTION marked the emergence of mature, independent science has been the bedrock premise of most studies of eighteenth-century chemistry. However, this assumption conflicts with recent demonstrations that the transformation of was powerfully affected by physics. Henry Guerlac, for example, fosters an image of Lavoisier's as a branch of physics; Maurice Crosland, mindful of both physics and natural history, warns against taking too narrow view of what constitutes chemistry in the eighteenth century; and Jean Claude Guedon and Trevor H. Levere suggest that around the turn of the century was characterized by tension between ideas of chemical and those of physical heritage.1 To reduce the dissonance between the truism that mature and independent discipline emerged from the revolution and the theme of recent historiography that was heavily dependent upon physics, this paper exploits disciplinary perspective. Disciplinary history suggests that the chemical revolution was generated externally, by physics, which transformed an already largely independent discipline and then withdrew from it. By mid century, in France had achieved great measure of independence. It has coalesced around small, Stahlian school drawn from medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial practitioners; and it had narrowed its focus onto mineralogy and wet-chemical analysis (procedures conducted in aqueous solution and interpreted in terms of affinities) and onto combustion, calcination, and reduction (phenomena requiring dryness" @default.
