- W2080406246 abstract "ISTORICAL grammar ordinarily operates on the assumption that, in a complex re-ordering of language material, the initial gambit is performed by the sounds, as it were (a situation which seems to make phonological changes spontaneous, up to a certain point, but certainly not chaotic), with the forms following suit in re-adjusting themselves to the new situation. Fifteen years or so ago, an experimental attempt, with the use of Old Spanish data, was made to explore the occasional possibility of a reverse sequence of events. Where the older approach has yielded no satisfactory results, it was argued that the pressure exerted by an unusual configuration of some vitally-needed paradigm or by a cluster of mutually supportive derivational suffixes-say-could have provided the stimulus for the given speech community to engage in an innovative reorganization of its sound structure. The specific examples selected were, first, the shifts from ancestral -LG-, -NG-, and -RG(as in Lat. MULGERE, RINGI, and SPARGERE) to -lz-, -nz-, and -rzin Old Spanish, and, second, the tendential monophthongization, mostly toward the end of the medieval period, of the rising diphthong ie to i (as in priessa > mod. prisa) and, in its wake, of its counterpart ue to e (as infruente > frente)in not wholly symmetrical fashion, I hasten to add.'" @default.
