- W2080459965 abstract "ABSTRACTCollege students (N = 90) reported their pro-environment behaviors as well as their pro-environment intentions, their explicit and implicit attitudes about the environment, and their knowledge about environmental issues. Intentions and knowledge significantly and independently predicted behavior. Environmental knowledge was not significantly related to attitudes. Implicit and explicit attitudes were significantly but only moderately related. Only explicit attitudes, however, were strongly related to intentions, and intentions completely mediated the influence of explicit attitudes on behavior. Men were found to be more knowledgeable than women about environmental issues; older students had more favorable implicit and explicit environmental attitudes. This research suggests that knowledge about the environment and explicit attitudes influence behavior through different pathways, which may have implications for interventions seeking to increase environmentally friendly behavior. Keywords: attitudesenvironmentgender differences Notes1. There have been questions as to whether the NEPS can be treated as a single measure of attitudes or if five subscales are necessary to account for multiple dimensions (CitationDunlap et al., 2000). Findings indicate that there is consistency among the questions in the test, enough to consider the NEPS a single measure of environmental attitudes (CitationDunlap et al., 2000). To verify this conclusion, the NEPS subscales were examined in a principal components analysis to determine whether the full NEPS provided a single accurate measure of explicit environmental attitudes. A single dominant component emerged, with an eigenvalue of 2.92 that accounted for 58% of the original variance. Each of the NEPS subscales loaded substantially and positively on this component (loadings ranged from .65 to .86). Accordingly, we used the NEPS total score.2. The recommended fit indices has been a subject of debate (e.g., CitationBentler, 2007; CitationHu & Bentler, 1999; CitationJackson, Gillaspy, & Purc-Stephenson, 2009; CitationMcDonald & Ho, 2002), but the following are a fair representation: Measures of absolute fit (chi-square), parsimony corrected fit (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation or RMSEA), and comparative fit (Comparative Fit Index or CFI). In good fitting models, chi-square is not significant, the RMSEA is < .05, and the CFI is > .95.Additional informationNotes on contributorsDebra Siegel Levine Debra Siegel Levine is affiliated with the University of Michigan.Michael J Strube Michael J Strube is affiliated with Washington University in St. Louis." @default.
