Organic matter or humic material appear to be the principal binding ligands and the ensuing stable chemical linkages reduce the toxicity of the respective pollutant. Consequently this phenomenon constitutes an effective and safe method for detoxifying the environment. The process can be initiated by an oxidative coupling reaction, which is catalyzed biologically by polyphenol oxidases and peroxidases and chemically by certain metals and clay minerals; this process may also occur by auto-oxidation. Coupling reactions involve the production of free radicals and result in the formation of CC, CO, CN and NN linkages between the humic substances and the pollutants. We investigated the catalytic effect of enzymes on phenols, aromatic amines and some pesticides and determined — whenever possible identified — the resulting oxidative coupling products. Certain humus constituents which are highly reactive towards phenoloxidases can interact with less reactive pollutants, resulting in a greatly enhanced coupling capacity. This method of detoxification through binding can be considered an alternative pollution control method which reduces or eliminates the toxicity of a pollutant by making it unable to enter the food chain." @default.
