- W2080472716 abstract "Abstract During the last few years several investigations have shown pronounced heterogeneities in the deep Earth's interior. The core-mantle transition, in particular, shows indications of an inhomogeneous structure and/or a complicated dynamic behaviour. Theoretical analysis of diffracted seismic waves has shown the major impact of changes of the radial velocity gradient near the core-mantle boundary (CMB) on the propagation of these waves. From theory it follows that diffracted P waves show a frequency dependent velocity and diffracted S waves show splitting. These phenomena have been found from digital seismograms. By means of these observations one can identify distinct regions of anomalous radial velocity gradient just above the CMB. The interpretation of these features is possible in terms of a chemical reaction between core and mantle materials. Such a process leads to long-wavelength anomalies in the lowermost mantle. The explanation of the velocity anomalies in terms of lateral temperature variations gives temperature differences of several hundred degrees Kelvin within the D″-layer. The observation of different behaviour of P and S velocities leads to the conclusion that chemical heterogeneity or a combination of lateral chemical and temperature variations are more likely." @default.
