The fossil originates from lacustrine sediments of late Lower Pleistocene age (0.9 − 0.8 Ma B.P.) above the Jaramillo polarity subzone. A tooth-by-tooth analysis comparing the fossil with Lower and Middle Pleistocene lions, tigers and jaguars and Holocene southwest Asian lions assigns it to the Eurasian jaguar, Panthera onca gombaszoegensis. Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction indicates a dry, warm meadow-steppe influenced by montane condition, with permanent water bodies present. This is consistent with the strong open-water affinities of the modern jaguar. The morphological proximity of South-western and Middle Asian jaguar specimens of late Lower Pleistocene age to P. onca gombaszoegensis remains from Central and Western Europe suggests an extended period of uninterrupted contact between the jaguar populations of Europe and Western Asia. Réexamen d'une hémimandibule de chat panthérin provenant des sédiments lacustres du Pléistocène inférieur (0,9 à 0,8 Ma, au dessus de l'épisode de Jaramillo) d'Akhalkalaki (Géorgie méridionale, Transcaucasie). Une comparaison dent par dent avec des lions, tigres, et jaguars du Pléistocène inférieur et moyen et avec des lions holocènes du Sud-Ouest Asiatique permet de l'attribuer au jaguar eurasiatique, Panthera onca gombaszoegensis. La reconstitution du paléoenvironnement indique une prairie-steppe sèche et chaude, influencée par des conditions montagneuses et avec des ressources permanentes en eau en accord avec l'inféodation à l'eau du jaguar actuel. La proximité morphologique des spécimens du Pléistocène inférieur tardif de jaguar d'Asie Sud-Ouest et du Moyen Orient avec Panthera onca gombaszoegensis d'Europe Centrale et Occidentale suggère une période de contact ininterrompu entre les populations européennes et de l'Ouest Asiatique. Das Fossil entstammt lakustrinen Sedimenten spätunterpleistozänen Alters (0,9 bis 0,8 Ma B.P.) oberhalb der Jaramillo-Polaritätssubzone. Einzelzahnanalyse sowie Vergleiche mit unter- und mittelpleistozänen Löwen, Tigern und Jaguaren sowie holozänen südwestasiatischen Löwen erlauben eine Zuordnung des Stückes zu Panthera onca gombaszoegensis, dem Eurasischen Jaguar. Für die Entstehungszeit der Fossillagerstätte ist eine durch montane Gegebenheiten geprägte trockenwarme Wiesensteppe mit ganzjährig offenen Wasserflächen rekonstruierbar. Damit korrespondiert die ausgeprägte Wasseraffinität des rezenten Jaguars. Die morphologische Übereinstimmung spätunterpleistozäner Jaguarfunde Südwest- und Mittelasiens mit den Nachweisen von Panthera onca gombaszoegensis aus Mittel- und Westeuropa deutet die Existenz eines europäischwestasiatischen Populationskontinuums an." @default.
