- W2080642775 abstract "In her sparely written new one-act play, A Number, Caryl Churchill engages with profound issues of human power and identity. The issues of exploring power relations and questions of identity—which have formed a major element of Churchill's work—first appeared in her early plays, many of which were written for radio. Appropriately, in connection with its premiere production of A Number, the Royal Court Theatre has mounted a series of rehearsed readings and productions without sets for six short Churchill plays in its Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. The six include several that relate thematically to A Number, including Identical Twins (1968), which focuses on personal identity; Not . . . not . . . not . . . not . . . not enough oxygen (1971) and Moving Clocks Go Slow (1975), which explore futuristic dystopias; and Traps (1977), which addresses the power of choice in a finite world. While its themes may not be new, this latest Churchill play focuses on a possibility that would barely have been envisioned thirty years ago but is now viewed as an inevitability." @default.
