- W2080652210 abstract "Abstract From the perspective of the Lifespan Model of Developmental Challenge (Hendry & Kloep, 2002), this paper explores the apparent paradoxes between the ideology of protection provided by adult society as part of youth socialization, and young peoples' perceptions of control, challenge and boredom. By caring too much, forever-organizing and over-structuring adolescents' leisure, adults destroy important learning opportunities. Adults often fail to empower young people by allowing preventing them from designing neither to design their own leisure pursuits nor to participate and from participating in decision-making. As a consequence, adolescents are not sufficiently challenged and feel bored, and often make use of their ‘free’ leisure time to engage in risky activities, which can turn out to be risky. The paper concludes by offering some suggestions and broad recommendations for the ways in which adult society might create possibilities for young people to find a balance between excitement and boredom..." @default.
