- W2080661608 abstract "The spread of adoptions of public policies among the American states has previously been analyzed from a number of perspectives, but the impact of space on the diffusion of such policies has been largely overlooked. The present study analyzed the spread of seven licensing policies among the American states in the 19th and 20th centuries to ascertain the impacts of geographical proximity on the diffusion process. The spatial arrangement of the states, both unmodified and modified to reflect economic and cultural similarities and dissimilarities, did play a role in the adoptions of the policies. There were also some time periods in which spatial factors were more prevalent. Clear leadership patterns among some neighboring pairs of states were also present in numbers unlikely to have occurred by chance. While spatial effects were not present in all time periods, there was clear evidence that space is a relevant factor that can affect public policy adoptions." @default.
