- W2080668829 abstract "Food irradiation on a commercial scale is successfully practised in a growing number of countries. Its purpose is the control of food-borne disease and the reduction of food losses through spoilage, premature sprouting and insect infestation. The irradiation of food at doses up to 10 kGy carries no safety hazards and introduces no special nutritional problems. Despite this, attempts by the European Commission to regulate food irradiation in the European Community by a directive have been repeatedly turned down by the European Parliament. The basis of information for the members of the European Parliament was a Committee Report which stated that irradiated foods had no nutritional value. This conclusion is compared with the numerous results available for experimental studies. It is concluded that the European Parliament has been completely misinformed." @default.
