Mass 211 patterns facilitated the subdivision (fingerprinting) of 88% of 282 Gulf Coast petroleums into merely seven classes. Evaluation of reservoir ages suggests that the patterns undergo progressive change with time. An end-member pattern occurs in Jurassic reservoirs; a second, closely-related, occurs principally in oils found in Lower Cretaceous reservoirs. Minor changes result in an “Upper Cretaceous” pattern which is duplicated in numerous oils occuring in all succeeding Tertiary and Quaternary stages over most of coastal and offshore Louisiana. Laterally extensive source formations and pervasive vertical migration are indicated. Although branched alkane concentrations can be brought toward thermodynamic equilibrium by mineral catalysis, the consistency of the observations indicates that this is minor, suggesting a biomarker status for the compounds involved. Both facies variability and metabolic evolution might be significant in the generation of the observed patterns." @default.
