- W208081852 abstract "The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has built over 100 projects using a lime-fly ash (LFA) stabilized soil as a pavement layer construction material. In October 2000, MDOT initiated State Study No. 147 entitled Long Term Effect of Lime-Fly Ash Treated Soils. The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term performance of this material in a pavement subbase or base course application. A major aspect of this study, and the topic of this paper, involves the determination of the in situ structural layer coefficient of LFA stabilized material. This paper includes the results of ongoing work to date of the State Study. A total of 63 FWD tests were conducted at 5 project sites where the pavement at each of these sites is less than 3 years old and can be structurally characterized as a 3-layer system. Two computational procedures were utilized in analyzing each of the deflection basins. One of these procedures, based on the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, is used to compute the LFA stabilized material structural layer coefficient at each FWD test location. The other procedure uses the Modulus 5.1 computer program to backcalculate the LFA stabilized material modulus at each of these test locations. Results from the computations from each deflection basin were plotted, and using regression analysis, a mathematical expression was selected that provides a reasonable model of the relationship between LFA structural layer coefficient and LFA backcalculated moduli for these relatively new pavements. Continuing work includes the evaluation of FWD test data from 4 additional project sites where the age of the pavement at each of these sites is in excess of 5 years. Ongoing lab work includes evaluating the effect of compacted density on the strength and stiffness of LFA stabilized soil mixtures. This evaluation will provide a basis for increasing the current MDOT specified compaction requirements of base and subbase courses constructed with this material." @default.
