- W2080986003 abstract "A study of the fine structure of the colonial marine hydroid Campanularia flexuosa has revealed significant features of nutritional processes. Relatively unspecialized gastrodermal cells are individually capable of carrying out a series of complex digestive functions. The first of these involves phagocytosis of food material (ingested brine shrimp and regression fragments) by means of pseudopod-like microvilli of varying length bordering the apical cell surface. It is probable that, prior to engulfment, a primitive contractile system composed of microfibrils near the mesoglea operates to fragment food into smaller units. Following phagocytosis, vacuoles are formed, and it is in these structures that intracellular digestion is believed to take place. Varying stages of hydrolysis are suggested by the amount and density of intravacuolar material. Mitochondria are often found closely associated with the outer surface of limiting vacuolar membranes, an observation suggesting that the mitochondria provide at least one of the energy transfer mechanisms for degradative processes. Hydrolysis products are thought to be transferred to other parts of the gastrodermis and to the ectodermis by means of vesicles derived from food vacuoles." @default.
