- W2080993759 abstract "In the last fifteen years, the structure of Malaysian society has been markedly affected by urbanization and rural-urban migration. Major cities such as Kuala Lumpur and P.enang have experienced considerable expansion and population growth. The creation of larger job markets and the establishment of industries in urban centres under the New Economic Policy have encouraged a rapid movement of people from the rural areas. An important consequence of this development is the changing ethnic configuration of many Malaysian cities and towns. Chinese dominance in the major urban centres is now gradually eroded by the large influx of rural Malay and Indian migrants. In view of these changes, it is necessary to ask what are their effects on ethnic relations in the urban areas? Does the urban environment provide resources for renewing ethnic identities (Cohen 1974), or does it offer opportunities for forging class alliances across ethnic lines (Lim 1980)? Obviously, these questions cannot be answered without reference to developments in the wider social system. It is not my intention to discuss these developments at iength, as they have been analysed elsewhere (von Vorys 1975; Means 1976; Nagata 1979). In general, Malay political dominance has not been openly challenged by the non-Malays since the violent events of May 1969.
